Gordon Chang to Newsmax TV: Close Embassies Amid China Spies
(Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live")

An alarming report that Chinese spies are operating on American soil to create a global registry of its ethnic minorities who live outside of China should be a wake-up call to the United States to threaten the closures of embassies and consulates, Asian affairs expert and The Daily Beast columnist Gordon Chang says.

"Previous American administrations have allowed Chinese agents to operate freely on American soil, and this has been a problem under the Bush administration and under the Obama administration, and we're seeing the same activity at this particular time," Chang told Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live."

"The Chinese basically believe they can do whatever they want, they can violate our sovereignty, so we are seeing this surveillance system."

According to The Daily Beast, Chinese authorities are "creating a global registry of Uighurs who live outside of China, threatening to detain their relatives if they do not provide personal and identifying information to Chinese police."

"There needs to be a whole new conversation between the administration and China – which is essentially: 'If you don't stop this we're going to take some severe measures like closing your embassy, your consulates, and all the rest of it – and we're going to close ours in China because we don't think we really need good relations with a country that doesn't respect our sovereignty," Chang told Newsmax TV hosts Miranda Khan, John Cardillo, and Gina Loudon.

Chang, a renown expert on Far East foreign affairs, is author of "Nuclear Showdown: North Korea Takes on the World."
