Author McEwen: Boys Need to Ditch Internet, Learn Life Skills

Author McEwen: Boys Need to Ditch Internet, Learn Life Skills
(Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now")

Author Scott McEwen said his new book bucks the trend of young adult books and pedals a patriotic theme he hopes will encourage boys to go outside and learn life skills like hiking, swimming, and fishing.

McEwen — a co-author of the book "American Sniper" — appeared on Newsmax TV's "Newsmax Now" and told host John Bachman that "Camp Valor" carries a unique message.

"So often now, we see our kids [spending] … 6-8 hours a day [on the internet]. I read some statistic the other day of kids watching videos and/or being on the internet, and from my perspective, nothing good comes from that," McEwen said.

"Especially when you see the stuff that's coming off the dark web nowadays. It's not a good thing for our kids. 'Camp Valor' is about getting a skill set outside and enjoying nature and doing something positive for this country."

McEwen said he is bothered by the fact things have gotten politically correct to the point American literary classics like the "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn" are now labeled racist and are no longer read in schools. And he noted most new young adult literature is written from a politically correct perspective.

"Granted, in their time period, there might have been some words used at that time that weren't the same as they are now," McEwen said of the classics. "That being said, they're still classics of American literature and unfortunately, these classics that have males that are heroes and males that become something to be proud of and to go out and actually accomplish something in their lives are shunned in today's culture."

Much has been written in recent years about a supposed war on young men, which some claim is partially responsible for the outbreak of gun violence among them.
