Rep. Burlison to Newsmax: Shut Down Border or We Shut Down Govt

By    |   Saturday, 13 January 2024 06:26 PM EST

Rep. Eric Burlison, R-Mo., a member of the House Oversight Committee, recently issued a stern warning on X, posting, "Listen, either we shut down the border and halt the influx of illegal aliens, or my colleagues and I will shut down the federal government. It's that simple. We won't continue to fund a Biden Regime that isn't enforcing the law and are facilitating the invasion of our country!"

Burlison appeared on Newsmax's "Saturday Report," discussing his post while expressing concerns about bipartisan border solutions, criticizing the inclusion of amnesty and increased funding without adequate measures to shut down illegal immigration.

The bill "is going to include a lot of amnesty. It's going to include a lot ... more money to process people that are coming here illegally and not really language that actually shuts it down," he said.

When asked about the commitment not to fund the government, Burlison remarked, "You know, I was hoping that we would hold the line on the appropriations. I joined Chip Roy and a lot of other conservative members of Congress, Andy Biggs and others, to take that stand."

He further discussed attempts to negotiate with House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., and expressed regret over a deal with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

"I'm saddened about that. I think that it puts us at a weaker negotiating point. And what I hate to see is that we're seeing a Senate negotiating with themselves," he said.

"I think that immigration, remarkably, is the top issue no matter what region of the country you were in. The flood of migrants into our communities, the strain that it has on our [communities], whether it's public schools or hospital systems, is overwhelming.

"It's the top priority, which is why I and others have come to the conclusion that we shouldn't be doing anything until we fix the border."

When asked about the Hunter Biden situation, Burlison acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations but expressed concern about the impeachment process, saying, "Look, going into this, I think politically that it's probably a bad idea to go about impeaching Joe Biden for the reason that Kamala Harris would likely end up being the recipient or be president. And I don't want to see that happen."

Burlison highlighted the evidence in the investigation of Biden, including bank records, FBI documents, and witness testimonies. However, he criticized Hunter Biden for turning it into a circus during a public hearing, advocating for a closed-door deposition with attorneys, followed by a public hearing.

Hunter Biden's conduct "should demonstrate to people exactly why we want to do a deposition with attorneys — you know, in a closed-door meeting — then make the transcripts public and then bring him in for a public hearing where we can talk about what was said under oath in a deposition. It brings gravity and seriousness to it," he added.
