Care will need to be taken both in reopening the Senate next week in the wake of coronavirus closures and in opening up states such as his own home state of Indiana, Sen. Mike Braun told Newsmax TV Tuesday, adding he has heard from Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that only the Senate will be in session next Monday.
"I just heard from Leader McConnell a few minutes ago, the House probably not coming back Monday," the Indiana Republican told Newsmax TV's "Spicer & Co." He also noted that there is a "point where we have to get back" to consider legislation and that it's important to reopen for business.
Meanwhile, back home in Indiana, Gov. Eric Holcomb has said he wants to move slowly and be cautious while reopening the state, and Braun noted that he gets what he means, as every county in the state has a different experience dealing with the virus.
"About 15% of the state is a metro area, and the rest of our state is fairly rural outside of that," Braun said. "We're on the same wavelength. Restart it county by county."
Braun also addressed the concerns about a potential meat shortage caused by the closures of several meat processing plants
"It begs the question of at what point do we need to take some measure of risks," said Braun. "Don't give one inch back to the disease, but we're right now at the cusp of having to make these decisions."
The alternative is euthanizing farm animals, and Braun said that is already happening, and that is a problem.
