The saga involving the alleged attack on black actor Jussie Smollet, who is now under investigation for potentially staging it, shows the true colors of the far left and certain members of the media, Bill O'Reilly told Newsmax TV.

During an appearance on "The Wayne Allyn Root Show" Monday, O'Reilly discussed the case surrounding Smollet — whose claim to have been attacked and hit with racial and homophobic slurs last month is now in question.

"I think they're gonna charge him [with filing a false police report], but I'm gonna give Smollett the presumption of innocence. I'm not gonna convict him of anything," O'Reilly said.

"This is where America is today. Covington kids, [Supreme Court Justice Brett] Kavanaugh, now Smollett. Virtue signaling by the far left and the media."

Holes have appeared in Smollett's story in the wake of the alleged attack that he said took place in the early morning hours of Jan. 29. He originally told police he was out walking at 2 a.m. to get a sandwich from a Subway in Chicago when two men attacked him, poured a chemical on him, put a noose around his neck, and shouted racial and homophobic slurs. Smollett, who is gay, also claimed the attackers said," This is MAGA country," a reference to President Donald Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan.

Some of the evidence recovered, along with interviews with two men, have forced police to shift the focus to Smollett.

O'Reilly said it's sad that some people who ripped Trump and his supporters after news of the alleged attack made headlines are not walking back on their comments as the case shifts.

"And then when the media's caught — which they are, they're just caught — a guy like [CNN's Brian] Stelter comes on and says, 'oh no, we didn't do anything wrong. We were fair.' Who do you think you're talking to, pal?"
