The annual survey from the American Bible Society found that a majority of adults in the United States want politicians to read the Bible — in hopes that they might learn a lesson or two.
"We see people who read that Bible when their life's being impacted, and they begin to understand that that could be a different maker in their lives — not just for them, but of their leaders," American Bible Society spokesman Geof Morin told J.D. Hayworth on "America's Forum" on

The survey found that 56 percent of adults think that if politicians read the Bible on a regular basis it would make them more civil. Fifty-eight percent said that reading the Bible would make politicians more effective.
Morin interpreted the results of the survey to mean that Americans "would love to see our elected officials engage with God's word, to learn more about maybe grace, forgiveness, and tone down some of the rhetoric."
"We understand, of course, our nation is more divided, more diverse in terms of its religious perspectives, and that's actually healthy," he explained.
"We're not looking for a monolithic presentation of religion in this conversation. But we think that the engagement with the Scriptures . . . helps this nation discover something important about some key things that we all need," he said.
"Let's learn about forgiveness, let's see some great examples of humble leaders who serve not just for themselves but for others. Let's be challenged by it, let's be encouraged by it," he added.
"That's what's coming through from the survey."
