Former New York City police commissioner Bernie Kerik told Newsmax TV on Monday that prosecutors should commit to charging people with crimes committed during the coronavirus outbreak.
Kerik said that although he agrees that certain prisoners should be released in light of the coronavirus outbreak, specifically those who are due to be released soon and are above the age where the virus poses a more significant risk, he disagrees with officials who say that charges should be dropped for certain crimes during the pandemic, including theft and drug charges.
He said, “for prosecutors, law enforcement agencies and mayors to say, ‘we're not prosecuting people for criminal conduct,’ that only emboldens the bad guys, only sends them out to do more bad stuff, and it’s dangerous to the community. So that has to be addressed, they cannot stop that enforcement capability.”
