Ben Carson said Sunday that his longtime friend and adviser Armstrong Williams has made some "bad judgments," but is still a vital part of his presidential campaign.
Williams survived the
shakeup last week of Carson's staff, though Campaign Manager Barry Bennett and Communications Director Doug Watts did not. Both quit during a conference call after Carson announced changes to the campaign.
Bennett blamed Williams for causing friction.
"You know, like anybody, he's made some bad judgments, no question about it," Carson said on ABC's
"This Week." "But he's a friend. He's a valuable individual. But, you know, we can't have people working at cross-purposes, and that's one of the things that has to be fixed, and is being fixed, and is fixed at this point."
Carson also was asked about the
execution of a top Shiite cleric, which prompted an attack on the Saudi embassy in Iran.
Carson said he doesn't condone the killing of the cleric, but added it is "unfortunate" the United States put its ally in such as position by showing support to Iran during last year's nuclear talks.
"We need to stop doing silly things that promote these kind of activities," Carson said.
