Armstrong Williams: Don't Blame Obama for Dallas

Armstrong Williams: Don't Blame Obama for Dallas

By    |   Friday, 08 July 2016 06:53 PM EDT

Political commentator Armstrong Williams told Newsmax TV that blaming President Barack Obama for the deadly police shooting in Dallas, as some critics have done, is wrong.

"I think to lay this issue at the feet of the president is also not dealing with the real issue, and while you may not like the president's rhetoric, this is an issue that we've had long before President Obama was in the White House," Williams told host JD Hayworth on "Newsmax Prime."

"I think the issue lies, in fact, is that the media and others have portrayed this mindset that it's only young blacks who are the victims of this police brutality and there are people of all walks of life … [that are] victims of the same kind of violence and brutality, but it just does not lead in the press if it's something that involves race."

In a separate interview with Dennis Michael Lynch on "Unfiltered," Williams said there's "something terribly wrong" with how some members of communities nationwide feel about law enforcement.

"Whether we want to admit it or not, there is just something terribly wrong with people, police, and the perception that certain communities have of police," said Williams, who once served as an advisor to former Republican presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson.

"I have a lot of camaraderie with police officers. I've never had a bad experience. I get stopped, I just haven't had a bad experience because I was taught respect and communicate, and I will always adhere to what is asked of me.

"But when you grow up as young people where your parents and the media and society and even the church tells you you cannot trust law enforcement, that they are against you because of the color of your skin, and the media takes this narrative of what we saw in Minnesota and what we saw in Ferguson and what we saw in Charleston, and you keep playing that narrative, you begin to believe that law enforcement is your enemy."
