Video Offers '4 A's' to Survive Active Shooter
(Florida Today)

A Florida law enforcement official has compiled a video on how to survive a shooting in the wake of mass shootings across the country.

"Sometimes bad people do bad things that are intended to harm others," Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey says in the five-minute video, posted by Florida Today. "Their motivations are different, and the warning signs may even vary, but without question, the devastating effects are always the same.

"We need to be prepared for the worst."

Ivey says there are four A's that will help victims survive an active shooter. They are:

  • Awareness: Look for exits, potential items that can be used as a weapon, and areas that can be used as a cover.
  • Avoidance: Try and escape or evacuate, and encourage others to leave with you. If in a room, "turn out lights, silence cellphones, and be prepared to attack," he advises.
  • Arm: "When the prey is armed, the predator thinks twice," he advises. "Think of possible weapons around you — knife, scissors, fire extinguishers, chairs, lamp, etc."
  • Attack: "Attack and fight like your life depends on it," he says, adding: "Commit to taking the shooter down no matter what."
