Democratic lawmaker Tulsi Gabbard just returned from a secret "fact-finding" trip to Syria where she met with government officials, Foreign Policy reports.
The Hawaii Congresswoman, who has opposed the idea of regime change in Syria, "felt it was important to meet with a number of individuals and groups, including religious leaders, humanitarian workers, refugees, and government and community leaders," Gabbard's spokeswoman told Foreign Policy.
Unclear is whether Gabbard met with President Bashar al-Assad; her spokeswoman declined to say either way, Foreign Policy reported.
Gabbard's goal, according to Foreign Policy, is to help end the six-year conflict that has resulted in the deaths of 400,000.
Gabbard met with President-elect Donald Trump regarding Syria back in November, she said in a statement at the time.
