The Trump campaign issued a strong statement Tuesday that seemed to be in response to a report claiming its former deputy campaign manager raised money for Trump-aligned candidates but has not used much of the money for anything other than salaries, administrative costs, and more fundraising.

"There is no excuse for any group, including ones run by people who claim to be part of our 'coalition,' to suggest they directly support President Trump's re-election or any other candidates, when in fact their actions show they are interested in filling their own pockets with money from innocent Americans' paychecks, and sadly, retirements," the campaign said, according to The Hill.

"We encourage the appropriate authorities to investigate all alleged scam groups for potential illegal activities."

Axios reported over the weekend that former Trump campaign deputy manager David Bossie's group Presidential Coalition, which has aligned itself with Trump, has given only a small slice of the millions of dollars it has raised to candidates for office who support Trump.

The rest of the money, according to the outlet, was used for more fundraising costs, the salary of Bossie and other staffers, and other internal costs.

From 2017-2018, according to the report, Presidential Coalition raised $18.5 million. Of that, $15 million was spent on things other than contributions to political campaigns. Just $425,442 was spent on political activities.

"The problem the president is going to have with this is 1) he does not like when people are perceived to be profiting off of him, and 2) these are not max out donors," a senior administration official told Axios.

Bossie responded by calling the analysis "fake news brought to you by a collaboration of the biased liberal media and unabashed left-wing activists."

Bossie often appears on news programs to defend Trump against his critics and talk up his accomplishments. He was the Trump campaign's deputy manager for the final two months before the 2016 election.
