Sen. Tom Cotton, R-Ark., suggested President Joe Biden should transfer part of his Secret Service detail to help protect former President Donald Trump leading up to the Nov. 5 election.
"Given that Donald Trump just dodged an assassin's bullet two months ago by a fraction of an inch, don't we think the Secret Service should have upped the level of resources on his detail, maybe had it match Joe Biden's detail?" Cotton told radio host Hugh Hewitt on Tuesday.
"And why didn't Joe Biden direct that to happen? … He's saying that Congress has to spend more money on the Secret Service. I mean, maybe Joe Biden should decide that he doesn't have to spend the next six weekends at his beach home in Rehoboth or even at his home in Wilmington."
The senator then provided Biden with a way to enjoy his pre-election weekends.
"You know what most Americans will do for the next six weekends? They will stay at their own home and watch college football and NFL and playoff baseball," Cotton said.
"Would it really be such a burden on Joe Biden to say, 'I'm going to stay in the White House or maybe go to Camp David to secure enclaves and enjoy playoff baseball and weekend football for six weeks. All the stress that it takes on my detail I'm going to serve to Donald Trump's detail.' "
Cotton also criticized the Secret Service's leadership for failing to prevent two assassination attempts — in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13 and at Trump International Golf Club in West Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday — on the former president.
"I join President Trump in commending the very skilled brave men and women on his security detail who apparently followed their standard operating procedure and executed it to a T," Cotton said.
"I think it raises extremely troubling questions, though, about Secret Service leadership and how they let the detail be so minimally resourced. They've acknowledged now that President Trump doesn't have the same level of security as Joe Biden, the sitting president, and understandably we want the sitting president in the chain of command and with the nuclear football, to have the highest level of security."
