Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Kaine said Sunday he wouldn't trust the life of his Marine son under Donald Trump as president.

In an interview on CBS News' "Face The Nation," the U.S. Senator from Virginia said he agreed with an op-ed critique by former Secretary of State Robert Gates that Trump "is unqualified and unfit to be commander-in-chief."

Host John Dickerson then asked Kaine if Trump were elected, would Kaine "trust his life under that commander-in-chief."

"I wouldn't," Kaine responded, adding, however, he wouldn't tell him to leave the military.

"My son is a very independent guy and he's going to make his own determination, and my other two children are equally independent," Kaine said.

"But Donald Trump has demonstrated by his trashing the military, by his belief that we need more nukes, but especially by his praise of dictators, even encouraging the Russians to commit cyber espionage against the united States, he's demonstrated that he shouldn't be within 10 time zones of being commander-in-chief," he said.
