The deal that's been reached with Mexico on immigration is a win-win for both nations, Sen. John Thune said Tuesday.

"It's a good deal for the United States, the fact that they have decided finally to intensify their efforts to start helping us control our southern border," the South Dakota Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "It suggests they are getting the message."

Mexico's agreement to enforce security at its own southern border will be "good for them," too, said Thune, and if it follows through there will be a "significant reduction" in the numbers of people entering the United States and seeking asylum.

He added that tariffs were a "tool" President Donald Trump used effectively, even if there were many concerns about them, because "it certainly sped up what they were going to do anyway."

Thune added that he "couldn't be more proud" than to stand with Trump as he wants to put American jobs and workers first through using tariffs.

"We have got a strong economy and that's the reason why he does have the leverage to force China to the table and hopefully get some concession there," said Thune. "We have a strong economy because of the policies that Senate Republicans, House Republicans, and the administration and our president have put into place."

Thune also discussed the upcoming hearings on big tech, saying that it should not come as any surprise that companies like Google, Facebook, and Amazon are being reviewed.

"I don't think we want to prejudge any of these cases," said Thune. "If they are focused on creating, they will probably be fine. There is a broad concern among the American public today about the collection of their information, the use of their information, how it might be being misused."
