An immigration activist who shut down the Statue of Liberty on Independence Day serenaded her supporters with a profanity-laced chant outside a federal court in Manhattan on Friday.
Therese Okoumou, who was arrested for climbing onto the Statue of Liberty's right foot, appeared outside the federal court, where she began her "song" for her supporters, reports The New York Post.
“America, you motherf–ers! You drug addicts! You KKK! You fascist USA," Okoumou, who was born and educated in the Democratic Republic of Congo, shouted out.
The Staten Island resident has lived in New York City for at least the past 10 years, reports The New York Daily News. A few months ago, she joined the group Rise and Resist, which flew a banner calling to "Abolish ICE" near the Statute of Liberty while Okoumou climbed onto the landmark. A member told the Daily News Okoumou has participated in about one protest a week.
When she appeared at the courthouse on Friday, she was wearing a green dress, proclaiming "I really care, why won't you?," in an apparent mockery of the "I really don't care, do u" jacket First Lady Melania Trump wore to the nation's border to discuss immigrant children who had been separated from their parents.
On Saturday, former Secret Service agent Dan Bongino told Fox News' "Fox and Friends" that Okoumou and people like her represent the radical left.
"They've been this forever," he said. "They're the anti, anti-Communist. They're against us. Everything we stand for, they're against."
The Post reported that Okoumou is facing a year and a half in prison. On Friday, however, her lawyer, Ron Kuby, said his client would agree to a plea deal if she can avoid time in jail.
She is facing several federal charges, including interference with government agency functions, trespassing, and disorderly conduct.
