President Donald Trump expects Canada and Mexico to work with the U.S. to improve the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue said Monday on Fox Business' "Mornings With Maria."

"He's expecting Canada and Mexico to come to the table and have a renewed, modernized NAFTA that will be good for American agriculture," Perdue said.

Trump is set to speak at the American Farm Bureau Federation's national convention, the first time in around 26 years that a current president has spoken at the convention, host Maria Bartiromo said.

"The president needs to communicate to farmers today that he's all for a fair, free trade deal with NAFTA. He's a tough negotiator, and he wants a good deal for American farmers and the American economy and the American people," Perdue said in the Fox Business interview.

Farmers understand that NAFTA has been "generally good" for agriculture in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, Perdue said. "They're also under a lot of duress over overproduction worldwide over the last four or five years. Agriculture commodity prices are low — some are at break-even or less than break-even prices, and that puts a lot of stress on farmers' income and families," the secretary said.

Perdue called for more free trade with other countries.

"If we want to have free trade, let's have free trade. I'm confident that our farmers can produce and compete with anyone on the planet," Perdue said in the Fox Business interview.

The secretary posted a tweet Monday at the Farm Bureau convention, saying he was laying out a "vision for rural prosperity."
