In a jolting reminder of today’s scary world of school shootings, kindergartners in one class are being taught what to do in case of a lockdown drill — to the gentle tune of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star."
"Lockdown, lockdown, Lock the door/ Shut the lights off, Say no more/ Go behind the desk and hide/ Wait until it’s safe inside/ Lockdown, Lockdown it’s all done/ Now it’s time to have some fun!" a poster at Somerville Public School in Massachusetts reads.
Georgy Cohen, whose daughter will be attending the school, posted a picture on Twitter of the sign which is taped to the chalkboard in one classroom.
"This should not be hanging in my soon-to-be-kindergartener’s classroom," Cohen wrote.
The photo of the eerie lyrics has gone viral.
In an interview with The Boston Globe, Cohen added:
"When I was in kindergarten, we had fire drills. It was different — we didn’t have these same types of threats …These are the things they unfortunately have to do. I get it."
"Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" – one of the most popular and recognizable children’s songs in the world, is an English lullaby with lyrics by Jane Taylor and sung to the tune of a French melody. The song was first published in 1906.
