Sheldon Adelson, a Las Vegas casino mogul, is donating $30 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, a group aligned with Republicans in the House of Representatives, Politico reported.
House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., met with Adelson and his wife at Adelson’s Venetian Hotel last week, along with Norm Coleman, chairman of the Republican Jewish Coalition, Congressional Leadership Fund overseer Corry Bliss, and Ryan aide Jake Kastan, Politico reported.
The group presented the case to Adelson about the importance of Republicans retaining the majority in the House of Representatives in the November midterm elections, the report said.
Coleman secured the donation after Ryan left the room, as Ryan is not allowed to solicit seven-figure political donations, Politico reported.
The donations is triple the amount Adelson provided to the Congressional Leadership Fund in 2016, and earlier — in the 2016 election cycle, Adelson gave the fund $10 million in August, the report said.
President Donald Trump’s administration was considering an offer from Adelson to pay for at least part of the new U.S. embassy in Jerusalem, four U.S. officials told the Associated Press in February.
