Rep. Seth Moulton, D-Mass., has thanked and admonished the Republican National Committee for sending him an improperly folded American flag this week.

"Hey, @GOP thank you for mailing me the flag and a copy of the flag code," Moulton tweeted on Thursday, along with a picture of the flag and letter. "Next time, show some respect and fold it properly."

Moulton, a veteran of the Iraq War and a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, received the letter and flag from RNC Chairwoman Ronna Romney McDaniel, who wrote in response to a recent flag burning outside the White House on the Fourth of July.

"In recent weeks it has become increasingly clear that the proper respect and handling for the United States flag is an issue for the Democratic Party," McDaniel wrote. "The American flag is a powerful symbol of freedom and independence that many have died to protect. It deserves to be treated as such."

The flag sent to Moulton was stored in a box and folded into a rectangle. According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, the proper way to fold a flag results in a triangular shape with only the blue field with white stars visible.
