Report: Secret Service Agent Leaked Obama's Schedule to Impress Woman

By    |   Thursday, 02 Oct 2014 05:20 PM

A tipsy Secret Service agent leaked details of President Barack Obama's campaign schedule to the Romney campaign days in advance – a blatant breach of protocol – allegedly to impress a woman staffer, a former communications director on the 2012 campaign trail reports.

Inside Sources publisher Shawn McCoy, who worked as Iowa communications director for the Romney campaign, reports the married agent, who was supposed to coordinate security ahead of several stops by Obama "in a key swing state," blabbed the details after downing "a number of drinks" at a bar in late October 2012.

"[U]nprompted and in an apparent attempt to impress one of the staffers," the agent "began providing details of President Obama’s schedule. The information included times and locations of the president’s events in the final days of the election," McCoy reports, citing two unnamed sources.

McCoy says the leaked schedule was passed on within the Romney campaign, though its source wasn't revealed, and "therefore, was met only with skepticism."

"The details of the President’s schedule later proved to be accurate," he writes.

McCoy reports the same agent on a separate occasion "provided joy rides in a Secret Service vehicle with the lights flashing."

Former advisers to the Romney campaign told McCoy the leaked schedule "did not impact the campaign’s strategy" and " received little attention as the election was days away."

The breach, however, is the latest in a string of troubling security issues involving the Secret Service.

An unnamed former member of the presidential advance team under President Bush told McCoy "it’s very concerning that there are some who would put the lives of the president and their Secret Service colleagues in peril."

"The president isn’t just a person," the Bush advance man told McCoy. "He’s an institution, a third of our functioning government, and a primary target for any country or group who would seek to do our country harm."

The Secret Service didn't immediately respond to McCoy's report.

Secret Service Director Julia Pierson resigned Wednesday as the agency came under fire for a Sept. 19 incident in which intruder Omar Gonzalez, armed with a knife, climbed over the White House fence and wandered deep inside the building – gaining access through two unlocked doors.

The agency also is being hit for other incidents, including one in which an armed man was allowed onto an elevator with Obama last month.
