The Washington Department of Labor and Industries is investigating the cause of the deadly crane collapse in Seattle, focusing on the four companies involved in dismantling the crane, The Seattle Times reports.
The report comes two days after a construction crane fell from a building on Google's new Seattle campus during a storm that brought wind gusts, crashing down onto one of the city's busiest streets and killing four people.
"Our goal is to pick this apart and understand what happened," said Tim Church, a spokesman for L&I.
An investigation will take months.
Church said the department is seeking information from four companies: general contractor GLY Construction, subcontractors Northwest Tower Crane Service, and Omega Morgan, and Morrow Equipment.
Morrow owned the tower crane and Omega Morgan removed sections of the larger crane with a smaller one – tower cranes are the largest of its kind and are assembled on the construction site. Northwest Tower Crane Service disassembled the crane into pieces.
Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan said L&I inspects tower cranes regularly.
"The workers who work on them are very good. I think that we've had a good track record here. But of course we're going to pay extra attention to make sure that the cranes that are in Seattle today are safe," she said, per King5 News.
The city has more cranes building office towers and apartment buildings than any other in the United States.
