Russia's deputy foreign minister says the Moscow has evidence the U.S. has tried to interfere in their upcoming presidential election, CNBC reported Monday.
The information came from the Interfax news agency, who quoted Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov saying the U.S. was aiming to create chaos in Russia, adding that sanctions from the U.S. were aimed at destabilizing the country, the report said.
Ryabkov provided no evidence to support his claims, CNBC reported.
A presidential election in Russia is set for March 18 and opinion polls show overwhelming support for President Vladimir Putin, but observers in the west question the democratic merits of Russia's electoral process, CNBC's report said.
U.S. intelligence agencies have agreed that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election, but Moscow has denied those claims. Putin on Friday told NBC News that he had not been given evidence from the U.S. to back up those claims.
