Putin: Russia Needs Facts on Meddling

By    |   Saturday, 03 March 2018 08:19 PM

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Friday told NBC News that Russia had not been presented with evidence from the U.S. that Russian nationals meddled in the 2016 presidential election and said he wouldn’t charge the parties involved if they didn’t “violate Russian laws.”

"We cannot respond to that if they don't violate Russian laws," Putin told NBC’s Megyn Kelly. "People who are well educated must understand that we in Russia cannot prosecute people if they have not violated Russian law."

Putin contended he could not take action unless it went through official channels.

"It takes an official request to the prosecutor-general of the Russian Federation. Give us a document, give us an official request," Putin said. "This has to go through official channels, not through the press or yelling and hollering in the United States Congress."

Special Counsel Robert Mueller in mid-February charged 13 Russians and three Russian companies with an elaborate plot to interfere in the elections through social media propaganda aimed at assisting Republican Donald Trump and harming the prospects of his Democratic opponent, Hillary Clinton.

The indictment represented the most direct allegation to date of Russian meddling and said Russians created bogus Internet postings and posed online as American political activists. The intent of the meddling, the indictment says, was to "sow discord in the U.S. political system, including the 2016 presidential election."
