Rep. Max Rose, a veteran of the war in Afghanistan, Friday commended President Donald Trump for his last-minute decision to put the brakes on military strikes in Iran, as the United States does not need "yet another John Bolton war" in the Middle East.
"What we need right now is clearly a policy of courageous restraint, one that is layered with strategy and defined objectives," the New York Democrat told MSNBC's "Morning Joe." "I was in Afghanistan just six years ago, I have friends deployed four, five, six times in never-ending wars. We certainly do not need another one in the Middle East right now."
Trump and Bolton, his national security adviser, have been debating about how to deal with Iran, CNN reported Thursday, Trump has often stated he wants the United States out of the "endless" wars in the Middle East, while Bolton has strongly advocated regime change in Iran.
"We will have people enlisting in the United States military who were not born on 9/11," Rose said Friday. "We have to repeal and replace the Authorization for Use of Military Force."
Instead, the money should be invested in infrastructure, and the United States can have a "smart and cost-effective national security policy."
There are two different issues with Iran, its nuclear program and its efforts using non-state actors, said Rose.
"When it comes to this nuclear program we should have one simple objective and that is to reinstitute a new agreement, a new international agreement, one that has either a dramatically extended sunset clause or no sunset clause at all," said Rose.
