Former Texas Gov. Rick Perry blamed his indictment and the inability to get on the main debate stage for drying up donations needed to keep him in the GOP presidential race.
He
pulled the plug on his effort Friday.
Perry said Monday on Fox News Channel's
"Hannity" that his campaign knew early on that his indictment for coercion of a public servant and abuse of official power had to be thrown out, and that he needed to rank in the top 10 of candidates to be able to make the main debate stage on August 6.
A
state appeals court in July threw out the coercion charge, but not the abuse of power charge. And Perry narrowly missed the main debate stage.
"We missed it by just a few percentages of one point," Perry said. "When those two things didn't happen, it had a very negative impact on our fund-raising through the summer."
Perry has called the indictment political, and has received support from many in the mainstream media and the political left. He said he expects the other charge to eventually be thrown out as well.
"But the political opponents, they did their damage," he said.
