Former Trump campaign adviser Rick Gates will plead guilty to charges of money laundering and illegal foreign lobbying relating to his work for Ukraine's former president and his political party, and will testify against former business partner and Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort, a person with direct knowledge of the developments told the Los Angeles Times Sunday.
Gates, 45, has been in talks with special counsel Robert Mueller's investigators for about a month. A plea deal will be announced "within the next few days," and Gates can expect "a substantial reduction in his sentence" if he fully cooperates, according to the person who spoke with the Times.
Gates "understands that the government may move to reduce his sentence if he substantially cooperates – but it won't be spelled out," said the person.
Gates and Manafort were indicted in October and both pleaded not guilty. Should a plea deal be reached, Gates will join ex-Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos and former national security adviser Michael Flynn in cooperating with Mueller's wide-ranging probe into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and whether Trump or his aides committed crimes before, during or since the campaign.
