House Ways and Means Chairman Richard Neal used his government-funded official Facebook page for campaign advertisements, which could be in violation of House Ethics rules that forbid campaign business on House official resources, Roll Call reported on Tuesday.
In the Massachusetts Democrat’s official Facebook page disclaimer, some $100 was spent on the ads in 2018 paid for by “Richard Neal for Congress Committee, Treasurer Michael F. Hall.”
This suggests that Neal’s campaign funds paid for the ad to appear on the House office’s Facebook page.
House official resources, including social media, are under the purview of the House Administration Committee, whose rules prohibit any campaign use on member websites.
The regulations also explicitly state that campaign funds may not pay for a member’s official expenses, which are used to maintain and operate their official resources.
Both ads are approximately 30 seconds in length and include written text stating: “Commit to vote on September 4th for Richard Neal” at the conclusion of the video, with the note, “Paid for by Richard E Neal for Congress Committee.”
