House Democrats are clamoring to target President Donald Trump's tax refunds with new House and Ways Committee Chairman Richard Neal, D-Mass., planning to first build a case that presidents should release their returns voluntarily, according to his spokesman.

Democratic lawmakers and activists have been pushing for Trump to release his returns ever since the 2016 presidential campaign, reports Politico.

Neal's spokesman, Dan Rubin, told Politico earlier this month that a formal push to force Trump to release the tax returns may not happen until February, when he plans to put public attention on the matter with the first bill House Democrats plan to present.

The bill would include rules requiring Trump and future presidential and vice presidential candidates to release tax returns.

Neal's approach may not sit well with some Democrats, however. Two days after the party won the House in the midterms, more than 50 groups signed on for a full-page advertisement in The New York Times urging the new lawmakers to make the president's tax returns a priority on day one.

House Democrats are also planning to target other Trump practices, including a probe of the Trump Hotel deal, changes to the census and food stamps, and other actions that will mean a series of oversight hearings, subpoenas and more to target Trump's more controversial policies.

Other targets will likely include a look at the Justice Department and acting Attorney General Matt Whitaker; the activities of former Interior Department Secretary Ryan Zinke and ex-EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt; the actions of Education Secretary Betsy DeVos; the border policy, and the "sabotage" of Obamacare.
