Sen. Paul: Graham 'Wrong' on Rethinking Syria Pullout

By    |   Thursday, 17 January 2019 11:03 AM

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., was "wrong" with his call for President Donald Trump to think carefully about his call to pull troops from Syria, Sen. Rand Paul said Thursday.

"For those who say if we leave, they're reorganize, they've been killing each other for a thousand years over there," the Kentucky Republican told Fox News' "Fox and Friends." "They still celebrate the Battle of Karbala from 680 AD...there's always going to be radical Islam over there."

The United States has "helped these people to the tune of trillions of dollars," said Paul. "They need to stand up and fight. We've killed 99 percent of ISIS. (It) is a remnant over there. Can they not kill one percent...what I would say is that when Islam begins to police Islam is when I think it's going to happen."

On Wednesday, Graham, while commenting on a terrorist bombing in Syria that claimed American lives, said the attack is proof that Trump should look "long and hard" at whether to pull US troops out of the war-torn country.

Paul also pointed out that while there is a great deal of "gnashing of teeth" over Trump's call to pull out troops, the majority of the personnel will be moved about 50 miles away, where there's a big base in Iraq."

Paul said he met with Trump in the White House on Wednesday, and he believes the president's first concern is for soldiers and their families.
