The Proud Boys far-right group is in disarray after 10 members have been arrested and charged with riot and attempted assault as part of an investigation into their activities, The New York Times reported on Monday.

The all-male group has been widely condemned as a hate organization, and even its founder, Gavin McInnes, has distanced himself by announcing last month that he was quitting the group “in all capacities, forever.”

His departure left the organization without a figurehead, although the Proud Boys have declared that, “We’re not going anywhere.”

Enrique Tarrio, chairman of the administrative chapter of the Proud Boys, insisted that the group repudiates hate and racism and said it has even ordered white supremacists to leave its events.

Since McInnes founded the Proud Boys two years ago in New York, more chapters have sprung up nationwide, with its members clashing several times with leftist protesters and attending far-right rallies at which there were also white nationalists and other extremists.

A street brawl in Manhattan in October in which videos show that the Proud Boys initiated an attack against a handful of anti-fascist protesters has led to the arrests and probe.

Asked about the group, John Miller, deputy NY police commissioner for intelligence and counterterrorism, said that “incidents like this make it more likely that they’ll be higher on the radar.”
