Fifty-nine percent of registered voters say some American forces should remain in Syria, a new poll by The Hill-HarrisX reveals.

Here are the highlights from the survey:

  • 59 percent of Republicans favor keeping a military presence in Syria.
  • 60 percent of Democrats say some American forces should remain.
  • 59 percent of independent voters want some troops to stay.

“There is a majority of the American public that feels, for whatever reason, that American troops are still needed in Syria," Mallory Newall, research director at Ipsos Public Affairs, told Hill.TV.

"What's really interesting about this poll is that there's bipartisan support for this. Democrats and Republicans are virtually the same on this.”

The poll, conducted Jan. 12-13, surveyed 1,001 registered voters. The margin of error is 3.1 percentage points.
