3 SWAT Officers Shot, Suspect Killed in Latest Philly Incident

By    |   Wednesday, 12 October 2022 11:22 AM EDT

Three Philadelphia police offers serving an arrest warrant were shot and wounded, and the suspect was killed early Wednesday morning.

The wounded officers, members of the SWAT team, were taken to Jefferson University Hospital and were listed in stable condition, WPVI reported.

The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m. in North Philadelphia, where the officers were serving a warrant on a 19-year-old suspect wanted for an August homicide and other violent offenses.

Police said the unidentified suspect fired at officers through a door and a window.

"Officers were able to continue to breach the property where they took on more gunfire from this individual," Deputy Commissioner John Stanford said.

One officer was shot in the hip, another in the leg, and a third officer in the upper chest after a bullet ricocheted off his vest.

"Two of our officers will be released, hopefully, by the end of the day. The other officer will be admitted for some continuous observation," Stanford said.

When the suspect attempted to flee through the rear of the property, he fired at SWAT officers stationed there, police said. The officers returned fire, striking the suspect.

The suspect was taken to Temple University Hospital where he was pronounced dead just after 7:30 a.m.

Video from Chopper 6 showed police officers escorting children from the home before taking away two people, including an adult male, in handcuffs.

Police said the investigation was ongoing though they didn't believe anyone else was involved in the shooting.

The incident was the latest in a city that has been riddled with crime.

A report from The Philadelphia Inquirer indicated that "nearly eight people on average were shot every day" in the city during the 60-plus-day window from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Late last month, Philadelphia hit a citywide record of 1,000 carjackings this year as vehicle theft and overall crime continues to skyrocket, Fox's WTXF-TV 29 reported.

Crime in Pennsylvania has been a primary issue in the U.S. Senate race between Republican Mehmet Oz and Democrat Lt. Gov. John Fetterman. Critics say Fetterman is soft on crime.

Fetterman once voted to release a man sentenced to life in prison for killing a man with garden shears in a parking garage.
