Two Russian oligarchs were stopped during trips to the United States as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russia probe, according to a new report.
CNN reported Wednesday at least one of the oligarchs had his electronic devices searched upon landing at an airport in the New York City area. It was not clear if the other oligarch was subjected to a search.
The network also noted a third oligarch is being sought for an interview. That person has yet to travel to the U.S. since the request was made.
In each case, the topic of discussion was whether the oligarchs contributed to the Trump campaign, according to CNN. The Federal Election Commission prohibits foreign nationals from contributing to American political candidates and committees.
Sources told CNN that Mueller's team is also looking at whether any foreign nationals contributed to Trump's campaign through a legal U.S. citizen.
Since last spring, Mueller has been investigating whether President Donald Trump's campaign colluded with Russia to win the 2016 election. No evidence has been made public that shows collusion between the two parties occurred, but Mueller's probe is expected to continue well into this year.
Non-Russians have been stopped upon entering the U.S. in recent months as well, including American Ted Malloch — who said last weekend he was stopped after arriving in Boston from London and was asked to testify as part of Mueller's probe.
It was reported this week the Department of Justice gave Mueller the green light last summer to investigate former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort for colluding with Russia.
