North Carolina Republicans have sued Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper to force him to comply with their nearly three-month-old public records request for his daily schedule, travel itinerary, flight plans and travel finance reports.

“Despite his repeated promises of transparency, Governor Cooper has been the most secretive governor in North Carolina history,” NCGOP Chairman Michael Whatley said in a release announcing the lawsuit. “The voters have a right to know what their Governor is doing - even if he isn't actually doing anything to help them.”

The lawsuit, filed Wednesday, seeks the release of records regarding Cooper’s schedule and travel expenditures since Jan. 1, which it has sought since submitting the request on July 31.

The North Carolina GOP noted that Cooper has been sued by media outlets for records relating to his travel, including one by Charlotte, North Carolina, CBS affiliate WBTV for information about two trips in 2019 for political fundraisers in New York City.

Cooper, who was elected in 2016 by fewer than 11,000 votes out of 4.7 million cast, is facing Republican Lt. Gov. Dan Forest in this year’s election with the only gubernatorial debate scheduled for Wednesday evening.
