One of five defendants charged in a disturbing case of child abuse at a remote compound in New Mexico has been taken into the custody by immigration officials — less than 24 hours after a Taos district court judge ruled she could be released from jail, The Taos News reported Tuesday.
According to the news outlet, the Taos County Sheriff's Office reported U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services detained Jany Leveille, 35, on Tuesday, less than a day after Taos District Court Judge Sarah Backus denied the state's motion to hold her and four co-defendants in jail pending trial.
The remaining detainees are still in custody awaiting release, the news outlet reported.
Siraj Ibn Wahhaj will remain in jail on a pending warrant from Georgia, according to the Taos News.
Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe said he could not comment on the USCIS detainment Tuesday, except to say Leveille is from Haiti.
