House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler said Thursday a cartoon forwarded by Reps. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., and Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., is an example of the "repugnant" anti-Semitism that is growing in the nation's political dialogue from both sides of the aisle.
"The growing anti-Semitism in our political dialogue is repugnant," the New York Democrat tweeted Thursday, while also slamming President Donald Trump's recent statements. "@realdonaldtrump's comments about disloyalty are a vicious and dangerous anti-Semitic trope. And the Carlos Latuff cartoon forwarded by @RepRashida and @Ilhan can surely be read for its vile underlying message."
Tlaib and Omar had shared a cartoon drawn by an artist who had placed second in Iran's International Holocaust Cartoon contest. The cartoon showed a Star of David in the center and showed President Donald Trump trying to silence Omar, along with Tlaib shown with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's hand over her mouth.
The congresswomen shared the cartoon after Israel blocked them from entering the country, saying their itinerary showed intentions to promote boycotts, reports Fox News.
Both Tlaib and Omar have been criticized for comments critics say are anti-Semitic. Omar, after being elected, suggested funding from the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) motivated pro-Israel members of Congress. Tlaib, meanwhile, came under fire from House Republicans earlier in 2019 after she saying she has experienced a "calming feeling" when thinking about the Holocaust in part because Palestinians had helped to create "a safe haven for Jews" after the genocide.
