Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is trying to help President Donald Trump by preventing a vote on a bill to protect special counsel Robert Mueller, says Democratic Delaware Sen. Chris Coons.
CNN co-anchor John Berman asked Coons in an interview on Thursday if he thinks McConnell is “running interference” for Trump by blocking a bipartisan bill that would protect Mueller and his investigation from being shut down by the president.
"I see no other justification for refusing to bring forward such an existing bipartisan bill,” the senator replied.
McConnell said legislation is unnecessary, and that there’s no indication that Trump will attempt to end Mueller’s work.
“I have no reason to believe President Trump won’t take some precipitous action here,” Coons said. “Last week, [he] forced the resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions.”
Trump tweeted Thursday morning that Mueller’s team has “gone absolutely nuts,” and accusing them of “threatening” people.
