An Air Force inspector general probe into Massachusetts Air National Guardsman Jack Teixeira's intelligence unit could lead to more charges, reports The Wall Street Journal.
Teixeira, 21, was charged Friday in U.S. District Court in Boston with unauthorized removal and retention of classified and national defense information — a breach that has caused an international uproar and exposed explicit U.S. assessments on the war in Ukraine and other closely held secrets. A magistrate judge ordered Teixeira held until a detention hearing next week.
"At this point, there is no reason to think that anything particularly egregious occurred; but that doesn't mean that it isn't important to fully investigate and get to the ground truth of what happened," a defense official told the Journal.
Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall said Tuesday he directed the service's IG to investigate Teixeira's unit and temporarily reassign its mission to other units.
The military branch also said the 102nd Intelligence Wing is "not currently performing its assigned intelligence mission."
In addition, the Air Force is conducting a servicewide review of how each command handles classified information, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. C.Q. Brown told members of subcommittee.
Teixeira was recently promoted to Airman 1st Class and assigned to the 102nd Intelligence Wing at Otis Air National Guard Base, where his job was listed as a cyber transport systems journeyman.
The leaked documents exposed to the world unvarnished secret assessments on the war in Ukraine, the capabilities and geopolitical interests of other nations, and other national security issues.
Teixeira posted the highly classified material in a geopolitical chat room on Discord, a social media platform that started as a hangout for gamers.
One defense official who spoke with the Journal said they were "asking the same questions as you are: How did this happen? We are trying to figure out if there were any problems that we should be aware of."
