Democrats will not make the same mistakes in the nation's Rust Belt states that they made during Hillary Clinton's 2016 loss, GOP strategist Karl Rove warned President Donald Trump's re-election campaign on Wednesday.
"Last time around, the Democrats made a huge mistake in not campaigning enough in Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Wisconsin," Rove, a Fox News contributor, told "America's Newsroom." "They will not make this mistake last time around...you can't count on your opponent being stupid each and every time, and so the Democrats are making an effort this time."
However, Rove said that Democratic National Committee Chairman Tom Perez has been a "dreadful fundraiser," and he questions whether the party will have the money to keep up the intense campaign for the Midwest states.
However, those states are vital, he pointed out, as Trump beat Clinton only by 77,000 votes there out of 13 million that were cast, so Trump's campaign will this time have to fight against Democratic efforts to take the states back, and are already taking steps.
"When they have rallies in those states, they're collecting the information of everyone who wants a ticket and who is in the arena," said Rove. "They are laying that against a voter file to figure out who among that group they ought to recruit (as) volunteers and persuaders in order to create a veritable army in those states."
Meanwhile, Rove said that even though Democratic front-runner Joe Biden has been making some gaffes while speaking, he still remains more electable than his nearest competitors, Sens. Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, or Kamala Harris, and even if one of them pulls ahead of him, they'll have flaws of their own.
"People are sometimes accommodating to mistakes and gaffes and shortcomings of their favorite candidates," said Rove.
