Former Secretary of State John Kerry had a quick response Monday for Mika Brzezinski of MSNBC during an interview about his new climate change initiative, when she asked whether he would run for president next year.
"Because I'm doing what I’m doing right now," Kerry shot back, when Brzezinski asked why wouldn't he make a second run for the White House on the "Morning Joe" program. "How’s that?"
Brzezinski, co-host Joe Scarborough and Kerry himself laughed at the comeback, to which Brzezinski mused, "Pretty good."
Kerry, 75, the former Massachusetts Democratic senator, said in June that he was not running again for the presidency. He lost the 2004 election to Republican George W. Bush.
He was on "Morning Joe" to discuss his "World War Zero" climate-change effort and other political issues.
In an op-ed in The Washington Post on Sunday, Kerry called on China and India to take leading roles in addressing environmental issues.
"The United States will be back at the table after 2020," Kerry said, "but in this aberrational period of shortsightedness, now is the time for China, India and other countries to prove just what we are missing."
