John Kerry told The Boston Globe that he told President Biden he plans to keep serving as the U.S. special presidential envoy for climate through the United Nations climate summit in Dubai in November.
"There's sufficient unfinished business" and "it would be inappropriate to walk away" now, Kerry said.
Kerry hopes to build upon new technologies and spark additional funding at the summit, known as COP28.
He said his "main objective is to raise the ante at this COP, so we are coming out of there with a head of steam on emissions reduction and finance."
"We absolutely understand the road ahead and what we need to do, and I think we can make this COP even more important in terms of eliciting increased ambition," Kerry told The Boston Globe. "This has a chance of kicking everybody in the rear end and pushing this process into higher gear."
Kerry announced in 2021 an agreement between China and the U.S. that would phase out coal and reduce methane emissions. According to The Hill, he said the world could not "solve the climate crisis" without China's involvement.
After former President Trump withdrew from the Paris Accords, Kerry has continued to push for international cooperation in combating climate change.
