House GOP Leaders Meet With Central American Presidents

By    |   Thursday, 24 July 2014 08:09 PM EDT

House Speaker John Boehner and other House Republicans met Thursday with the presidents of  Guatemala and Honduras over the border crisis in a session that he described as "constructive."

President Otto Perez Molina of Guatemala and Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández visited Washington to discuss the thousands of illegal immigrant children that have been storming the U.S. border from Central America in recent months.

Boehner, the Ohio Republican, said that the presidents' visit to the United States was "further evidence of how seriously they are taking this situation."

"I impressed upon them how important it is we all work together to end this crisis and reunite these children with their families in their home countries," he said. "We continue to discuss our options with our colleagues, and remain firm in our commitment to find common ground and provide humanitarian relief."

More than 57,000 minors have been detained since October for entering the United States illegally after crossing the Rio Grande River in South Texas. The Obama administration estimates that the number could jump to as many as 90,000 by the end of September.

Other House Republicans at the session included Majority Leader-Elect Kevin McCarthy of California; Conference Chairwoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers of Washington; and Reps. Hal Rogers of Kentucky, Ed Royce of California, Michael McCaul of Texas, Bob Goodlatte of Virginia, and Kay Granger, also of Texas.
