President Donald Trump can fix the nation's healthcare issues, and Democrats and Republicans can work together, according to Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., who was re-elected in what he called a "brutal" election.
"You know I can work together because, the bottom line, my election was brutal," Sen. Manchin, who defeated Republican state Attorney General Patrick Morrisey to keep his seat, told Fox News' "Fox & Friends." "All elections are brutal today. But people are saying very succinctly and clearly we want healthcare fixed. We can do that."
Manchin said he has spoken with Trump about the healthcare issues.
"He can be Mr. Repair Care," Manchin added. "Call it Trump Repaircare. He can fix this, where it basically reduces rates, protects people with preexisting conditions, on and on. I will talk with [Tennessee Republican] Sen. Lamar Alexander again, and [Democratic Washington Sen.] Patty Murray."
He noted, in 2013, senators had a bipartisan immigration bill that led with border security first, and Trump can get the "absolute commitment" that was in the older bill.
"So, Democrats ought to come in with the ability to say 'OK, let's get off the dime. Let's make things happen; let's work together,'" Manchin said. "If they come in just swinging against everything, this is exactly what the people have said they don't want anymore."
Manchin said he was elected with a "mandate," as West Virginians want healthcare fixed.
"What we can do is fix what we have in front of us," Manchin said. "We know what doesn't work. We know the reinsurance plan in Alaska works well. Indiana has a good plan. We have things that we're able to do that really works. Let's do it. He is the one that can make that happen."
