The Biden Cancer Initiative, founded by former Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Jill Biden, after their son died of brain cancer, will shut down after two years, the New York Post reports.
“Today, we are suspending activities given our unique circumstances. We remain personally committed to the cause, but at this time will have to pause efforts,” said Greg Simon, the organization’s executive director.
The Biden Cancer Initiative began as the White House’s Cancer Moonshot program that Biden helmed in the Obama administration. Simon, who held a high-ranking role in the White House program, added that the foundation couldn’t recreate the Bidens’ “convening power and ability to get issues to the top of the list,” noting that “we tried to power through but it became increasingly difficult to get the traction we needed to complete our mission.”
The Associated Press reports that the organization encountered difficulty continuing its mission because the Bidens left after the former vice president announced his White House campaign. The AP reported last month that Biden’s touting his work with the nonprofit raised ethical concerns, since his foundation partnered with many individuals and groups with financial or regulatory interests handled by the federal government.
