James Comey’s secret Twitter account has been revealed, Fox News reported. After months of speculation it was confirmed that the former FBI director is the person responsible for the somewhat cryptic tweets belonging to @FormerBu.
The account was created in 2014 but its first tweet, a meme of Will Farrell with a link to the FBI jobs website, was posted in March.
Speculation about the creator of the account soon began to mount and was further fueled when Gizmodo reported that Comey was most likely the person behind the tweets.
According to the Gizmodo article, written by Ashley Feinberg, Comey let slip at an Intelligence and National Security Alliance leadership meeting that he had both secret Twitter and Instagram accounts.
Eager to track down his online presence, Feinberg did some searching and the trail eventually led her to the account, which was initially using the handle @projectexile7, named after a federal program that Comey helped develop.
The evidence was all there but it could not be confirmed until now.
@FormerBu has only fired off six tweets but the most recent posts are what gave away Comey’s identity.
A photo showing the back of a man standing in a cornfield was posted on Oct. 20 with the caption, “Good to be back in Iowa.”
The next day another photo was posted, this time showing a flock of pelicans against a blue sky, and referencing the Niebuhr’s Serenity Prayer.
On Monday Comey revealed his identity by posting a photo of himself standing on the roadside, and wrote “Goodbye Iowa. On the road home. Gotta get back to writing. Will try to tweet in useful ways.”
That same day, Comey’s close friend, Benjamin Wittes, laid to rest any remaining speculation by confirming that the former FBI chief was the account owner. “Ok, in light of this latest tweet, I will confirm that @FormerBu is, in fact, James Comey himself,” he posted to Twitter.
The big reveal has launched a new wave of questions as speculation now turns to why Comey is using Iowa as the focal point of his posts.
Some believe it could be a nod towards future plans for a presidential run, but CNN noted it could also be a coy marketing strategy for his upcoming book, due next spring.
