ISIS is willing and able to kill Americans with chemical weapons, as evidenced by Tuesday's purported attack on an Iraqi air base that involved mustard gas, Rep. Mike McCaul said Wednesday.

McCaul, the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, spoke with CNN's Wolf Blitzer about the terror group and its evolving methods of attacking both military and civilian targets.

"It demonstrates that ISIS is willing to use chemical weapons to kill Americans, whether it be over in Iraq and Syria or in the homeland, which is what we're always concerned about," McCaul said.

However, McCaul said it is likely ISIS does not yet have the ability to deploy chemical weapons on a target inside the United States.

"They certainly have the intent. Do they have the capability? Probably not," he said. "They'd have to get it into the United States.

"It also shows how they're becoming more desperate in the fight. . . . I think they've had this for quite some time. Now you'll see them unleashing it."
