A 13-year-old Indiana boy was charged with intimidation after he told his iPhone's virtual personal assistant, Siri, he planned to “shoot up” a school, supposedly as a social media joke.
The middle schooler was being held at the Porter County Juvenile Detention Center, and investigators don’t believe he had access to weapons, according to the Valparaiso Police Department.
In a Facebook post, the department reported the boy told the Apple virtual assistant “I am going to shoot up a school.”
The digital assistant then created a list of several Valparaiso schools nearby. The boy was identified as a Chesterton Middle School student.
The young teen on Thursday posted a screenshot of the inquiry and response on social media; it was reported to Chesterton police by the boy's social media contacts.
Chesterton police contacted the Valparaiso Police Department, which launched an investigation into the possible threat.
"The threat is not believed to be credible at this time; however, these types of communications are taken very seriously by the Valparaiso Police Department and our community," the Valparaiso Police Department said in its FB statement. "We continue to work with the Valparaiso Community Schools to ensure the safety of the students and staff."
