Apple assistant Siri will curse if you ask her for a second definition of the word mother, users began to report in Reddit’s Apple community on Saturday.
Reddit user thatwasabaddecision posted, “Ask Siri to define the word “mother.” When she asks you: “do you wanna hear the next one?”, answer “yes.”
Users who did so got the response, “as a noun, it means, short for motherf***er.”
Ars Technica pointed out that Siri did not say the second definition was vulgar or slang as the voice navigation service does with other words that fit those categories.
Siri's potty mouth was confirmed by many other users over many hours, but seems to have been changed as of Monday, with several other definitions added but none containing the expletive noted by other users.
Siri’s voice navigation performance has received its share of criticism since it was introduced, including misinterpretations of common speech and lackluster emergency comprehension. As another Reddit user pointed out, Siri tends to shy away from other coarse language (the user said she was a “prude” about other cursing), making this lapse all the more strange.
Ars Technica did point out that the Oxford Dictionary contains the second definition given by Siri, which may be where the odd response came from.
In another recent odd happening by robo-voice services, Amazon’s Echo products a few weeks ago began laughing creepily for no reason. Sometimes programmers hide surprising, strange or inappropriate content within games’ and apps’ programming, such as the “Hot Coffee” mod that was contained in the original version of “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas,” Ars Technica reported.
