A record number of migrant children are living in shelters in the United States, and more than a third of them are in Texas, according to a new report.
The Houston Chronicle reported this week that 14,030 illegal immigrant children are currently being housed in shelters. More than 5,600 of them are in Texas alone.
One year ago, the number was roughly a third of what it is now.
Thousands of migrants have traveled to the U.S. from Central America this year to claim asylum. That process often takes years, so the government is housing children and adults in temporary shelters as it plays out.
Thousands more migrants are on the verge of arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border after they traveled from Honduras, Guatemala, and other Central American nations.
Migrant children were held an average of 75 days as of August, according to government data cited by the Chronicle.
A record number of families were caught trying to illegally enter the U.S. in October.
